under a sheltering sky

the sky is described as blue

at night the sky is described

          as black

but what about the cloud covered sky

          that never clears

that never hears

          the prayers lifted

                   to its cold incoherent face

oh please do not mistake

          luxuries for lies

                   there is nothing behind

                             the sheltering sky

you believe in love,

          friendship and grace

clouds are ever moving

          and constantly retrace

                   lines that when complete

draw nothing

because there is nothing to be drawn

but what you imagine the clouds to be

circling and swirling

          until the clouds bleed

and i stand in their downpour

          smiling

                   amid the expectation

that this may be my last drop of rain

that this may be my last moment of pain

happiness regained?

but all i remember

was a meal, mexican,

after a dose of cancer fighting radiation

and how i enjoyed the meal and just being with you

nothing else is true

cause nothing else matters

as all that matters

are the moments of pleasure

under a sheltering sky
