jenny
joined a gym
wrestles
with weightlessness
for
a couple hours every night
so
i walk to this bar
bring
“the death of stars”
a
physics book about how stars die
and
how the universe will end
unlike
the present state of the universe
i
am not expanding my horizons
this
place reminds me of “cheers”
bartender
in the middle
with
all the fixings’
though
most customers occupy
the
tables and chairs that surround
across
from me is a woman
comes
in every night
drinks
two glasses of wine
leaves
you
can tell she is drunk
when
she enters
as
she tries her best to maintain
she’s
around my age
glory
starting to fade
though
at one time
she
must have stopped
the
room with her entrance
diamonds
dot her landscape
her
clothes are not from k-mart
and
the cash spills out
of
her purse when she goes to pay
she
shows confusion as she
performs
everyday functions
because
she is just so drunk
tonight
i watch her
glance
at the huge diamond ring
wonder
what it is that brings
on
her first drink of the day
can
we simply be dismissed
with
the word “alcoholic”?
is
this a suicide solution
or
the murder of memories
sorrows
cannot truly be drowned
but
that doesn’t stop us from trying
i
truly hope she doesn’t drive
but
she probably does
and
one day it will all
come
crashing down
when
she gets pulled over
or
runs over a pedestrian
my
philosophy takes a sledgehammer
to
any idea of an overarching morality
with
a longitude and a latitude
and
i really have no desire
to
go up the this woman and ask
but
if i believed in the power of prayer
i
would pray for her
